Thoughts From Andrew
Van Wersch
Regarding His Savary Island Cottage
Right from breaking
ground I could see that light would not be an issue (many
interior lot cottages on Savary have mould growing on the
exterior and a distinct musty smell inside). I
intentionally placed the septic field to the south of the
cottage, as well as the septic field area for the adjoining
property to the south once again, as this provides a large
window of unobstructed sun to keep this cottage warm and
dry. When putting the foundation in, I put a lot of care
and attention into not disturbing the indiginous plants.
The huckleberry bushes grow to gigantic proportions on this
island, as well as the ferns. I managed to save a beautiful
Yew tree that was just on the edge of the excavation; it is
the tree just off the west deck.
When designing this cottage it was important to keep the
footprint as narrow and small as possible, to keep the
forest as the major player in this natural landscape. I
wanted to design a cottage that brought the park like
forest inside while still having ample space to retreat in
comfort. I used the hemlock lumber from the property for
all the beam work, which keeps the cottage bright as well
as the ecological advantage of incorporating the trees back
into the property. To bring this lush vegetation to
the interior of the cottage I used 75 units of twin seal
glass to design an interesting door and window package . I
did not want any upper cabinets or large appliances to take
away from the panoramic views of the surrounding forests. I
got away from the typical large fridge by researching and
finding a large under counter fridge to maintain this
theme. It is still a mystery to myself and visitors that
this cottage at 800 sq ft can feel so roomy and spacious!
It has an eating bar in the kitchen, a stunning dining
nook, a two couch living room as well as 3 bedrooms
that can all have queen beds and armoires. All the bedrooms
have large windows with stunning views of the forests, and
there are no other cottages visible.
I will be building a storage building for fire wood, bikes
etc. I will also be putting a loft sleeping room above that
with a Jotul cook wood stove and a dry sink, for those
friends that need their own space.
The mechanical systems are very stream lined and efficient.
The solar panels pump water from the deep well and create
ample power for the fridge, lights, stereo etc. This place
is wired and plumbed like any ordinary house except it is
not connected to the outside world. There is a super
efficient Honda is3000 watt generator for backup power if
needed (rarely). The wood stove keeps this place warm and
cozy even on the coldest nights of winter( the cottage is
100% insulated).
The location of this cottage is perfect; it is centrally
located and close to all the beaches. Henderson is the
closest beach access, only a 5 minute walk away. This is a
great beach to get those spectacular sunsets over
desolation sound. This is a really beautiful cottage on a
really beautiful island.
